Star wars episode ix - the rise of skywalker production budget. So Star wars? the film series that got me into films all together. This series is one of my all time favourites and made me the film fanatic I am today. I am the person that will defend this series as much as i can, always a negative comment with a "But it means this which is good" SO how do I feel about the final film of the most iconic film series of my child hood. well. empty
And that pretty much sums up this film in pure simplicity, empty - no soul with no bravery to show darker decisions and more fascinating conclusions. I could start off here with all the minor mistakes of the film - why did the green lightsaber turn to blue - why did palpatine insist that rey killing him would turn her dark so she ends up killing him anyway in the name of good - why were there so many character introduced in the last film of the saga - why dont the ships of the sith fleet just move to an angle so they can shoot up at the rebels - where did palpatine get all the men to fly these ships - How did Po's ex girlfriend get off the planet before it blew up after she gave Po the captains coin - Why did Po's ex risk so much in the first place - Why didnt Leia finish her jedi training and help Luke stop ben's turn to the dark side - Did lando and the stormtrooper chick just start a weird relationship out of know where - AND WHAT DID FINN WANT TO TELL REY. But if i did that I would be here all night nitpicking and going after every little poor detail of the film.
So lets just go with the major parts - first of all the gutlessness of the film. The film has so many beloved characters that could of had such iconic and meaningful endings. Chewie being killed by rey's darkside which has been hinted at throughout the films. C3PO making the ultimate sacrifice of his memory, which is basically his life to help the ones he loves. So many sincere moments. and how were they treated? They were rushed and overlooked so quickly because literally 3 minutes later "Oh they are alive and well dont worry. This film just showed literally no guts to kill off a major character in the final film of the series to show this amazing emotional scene because (and i can only guess) that it wanted to pander to the audience?
So there is the gutless part spoken about, now, what about the emptiness I feel? I mean you look at the end of this series and what do you see. Po - still afraid to lead, still finds it hard to trust. Kylo ren - still a brat who did a turn to the light side, which was the single most obvious thing that was going to happen since episode 7. Finn - still a. kind of... meh nothing character. Rey - still a loner. Where is the progression of the story. Why were the production team so afraid to create a true bromance between Finn and Po. Rather than have rose crash into finn in episode 8 because "she loved him" why couldnt Finn crash into Po, because He loves him, he respects him as this leader, and Po finally sees how people look up to him. And then in this film, it could just add and add to it, where Po trusts him with his life and would do anything for him... instead they just add romance partners for both of them cos. what. Guys gotta get with girls I guess? And seriously what did rose do in this film. br> Then we get to Rey. and I loved this character in 7, I loved 7, it set up such an amazing premise. and even in 8, the star wars saga was setting up for this amazing finale where maybe they will BALANCE the force, like in the prophecy. That yeah Rey is part sith, but her heart is part jedi too, and the combining of the 2 of them allows her to control her emotion and create a new order for balance and peace, not war. This would of created an amazing conflicting and more important thought provoking ending. And then rather than her own who she is, she hides herself and becomes a skywalker thus reinforcing the classic and to be frankly honest boring "Good beats evil" trope.
Then kylo Ren. we all knew he was gonna turn good at some point, and he became good to. get his butt thrown in a hole? Like what was the point of this character, just so he could have a creepy romance and then sacrifice himself for Rey so Rey can go be a recluse on tatooine? What was the point of this character this film. he just got in the way for a hour, then got trapped, found this ex machina tie fighter and flew over to get his butt kicked and then die. I felt no emotion watching him die whatsoever. br> So I could go on and on and on about this, but I would bore you, so how about I explain why I gave it 3 star and not the 1 I am hinting at. well first of all the film is beautiful, the scenes so such beauty and throughout the chaos, there are some beautiful scenes, like where rey hands ren the lightsaber (even though we all saw it coming. The entire galaxy showing up to help the rebels was a truly uplifting scene. Lando felt nice in the film - they didnt disrespect carrie. The film had some nice and beautiful scenes, which were fun to watch... but overall... just a rushed movie with no guts and most importantly. no heart.
